Brown Crushed Coral

The top of my crushed coral is turning brown. There is a bit on the rocks also. I have a FO 55 gal tank. It doesn't seem to be the same as the diatom (sp?) outbreak I had during the cycle period. It hasn't increased much but it is at a slow pace. Do I just need something to clean the coral? I have a clarkii clown, firefish and coral banded shrimp, two turbo snails and 3 tiny hermits. I was thinking maybe a crab would take care of it???

It's algea. One of the MANY reasons it is not really used as widely as live sand.

More hermits would help. When my crushed coral gets a little dirty I just use my gravel vacuum to siphon it out.
