Brown stuff in sump of wet dry

Hey, does anyone know what the brown stuff is in my wet dry? It looks like clumps of dirt almost but I was not sure if it might be part of the bacteria? I was going to clean it out but don't want to mess with it unless I am sure it will not screw up my bacteria.

buildup of waste products...... if it is built up to much you can clean it out....
