Sounds like a standard green algea bloom which is normal for new tanks. Especially ones that start out with tap water.
Just keep wiping your glass, mine took a few weeks but then just went away.
Doing regular water changes will help also by keeping the nitrate level down.
Good Luck!

That is a question that is highly debated.....
I prefer to do smaller, weekly water changes. Others like to do larger, less often water changes.
My advice..........10% weekly, it works for me and keeps a good supply of trace elements in your tank without using additives.
Just make sure you are letting your new water mix for at least 24 hours before changing and make sure you are using either RO/DI or distilled water - NOT TAP.
Good Luck!

Honestly, I didn't know about that rule either for the first few years I was in this hobby.
I had fish only tanks and really didn't any problems.
Now that I understand why (fresh saltwater can have extremely high levels of many different bad chemicals that dicipate with time) I only use water that has been "cooking for at least 24 hours. Since I maintain 30, 60 and 250 gallon tanks, I go thru a lot of water so I found an old 95 gallon tank and set it up in my garage so I always have 50 gallons mixing at all times.
You will be fine, just let it cook next time.

Yes it works very well for me. Very stable water parameters including Alk, Ca, Mag, and PH.

must i have a pump on the water while it is sitting for that 24 hours or does it just need to sit out?

I have not used it.
My LFS uses Instant Ocean and RO/DI water to make their own which they sell for .75$ a gallon. If it wasn't a 90 mile trip (round trip) and if I only had one smaller tank to maintain I would use it!

that brown yuck as you say, is attributed to the tap water you used..... IT will go away now that you have started using RO water..... just keep using it...

Pump and heater set for the same temp as your tank.

I'm growing algae like crazy on my glass and wierd brown stringy algae on my LS and LR too. My tank has been up for a little over a week and my levels are all fairly low-ammonia <.25, trites 0, trates 20. I used RO water to fill. I have a turbo, 2 herms, and a damsel in there now. I just lit off my skimmer yesterday morning. Will this go away soon with regular changes? Will a cleaning crew be able to clean this up?
