I have a 75 gallon with high nitrates and want to build a refuge for it. The only size gallon i can find that will fit under the stand is 10 gallon which i was thinking maybe two of them. I want to DIY these and ask what would you do and what would i all need? I heard no to bio balls so what else can i put in there. Thanks

My 760W MH PC lighting will be in soon and i am upgrading the skimmer. As you can see i can only fit two tens on the side of the stand. Thanks

how deep is the sand bed?? Nitrates can build up in your sand

um.....it ranges from 2 to 4 inch...i guess 3 inches on average....i guess that is a lot. The sand is always getting blown around....i have a "SCWD" in the middle of the tank and the powerhead its hooked up to likes to fall down to the sandbed (usually when i'm at work or too drunk too notice) and whereever its pointing it will blow the sand away all the way to the glass bottom....so i have some pretty huge sand waves built up. I made a refuge with a TCP 5100K shining on some live rock and a big clump of Chaeto....but that was pretty much taken over and ruined by red slime algae.....very little chaeto left now

do you have a wet/dry filter? what i did with mine was just make the large compartment after the bio balls into the fuge....it was going good until the chaeto was killed by red-slime-buttface-algae...but up until then it was great...i could see all of the bugs and pods swimming in it. I bet one of those ten gallons would be enough for your fuge if u dont have a wet/dry...

For some ideas on what to put in your refuge, check out this guys site....he put chaeto, mangroves, cleaner clams, and live rock in his. I bought the same light bulb that he is using on his (except he has three of them going for his monster sump........
