Building a sump for a 120gal

Are you planning on drilling your tank or useing an overflow box? If you use an over flow box, or piped near the top, that would be plenty. My room mate and I picked up a 40g from Jan's on Telegraph and turned it into a wet-dry, fuge, sump for his 180g reef. Your tanks 6' long though, you might even be able to get a larger sump under your stand.

I have a 40 gal sump on my 120 it never fills more than a little over halfway so I would think a 30 should handle it. just make sure were the siphon breaks does not drain to much out of your main tank when you shut it off.

what David said, its not really about how big the main tank is, but the location of siphon breaks and overflows will dictate how much water siphons into the sump when the power goes out.

exactly, your sump will only be as full as how much water is in the whole system. on the return line all you have to do is drill a hole just below the water level in the main tank and when power shuts off the water will back siphon until it hits the hole and break the siphon.
