I have built all my own lighting systems for a fraction of the cost of buying complete systems.
What kind of lighting do you need?
Is the tank going in your living room or basement?
(basement lighting systems need not look as pretty).
Bulbs are the only components that are hard to cut costs on.
Let me know what kind of lighting your interested in and I'll try to help you any way I can.

tank will be in my bedroom, im not worried about cutting down on bulbs just the lighting systems themselves.. i want to set up a tank with fish corals ls and lr maybe a anenome.. not worried to bad about how it looks because i can build a canopy... but if it looks good it wont hurt

Go visit your friendly Lowes or Home Depot or any harware store and ask about their lighting. You've got to buy a lighting balast to hold the bulbs and then depending on the balast, figure out a housing structure to hold the balast. I attempted this with my 12 gallon but everything was just to big.
