I'm Building a sump/fuge out of a 20gal long aquarium. I pretty much have my design figured out and have the glass to silicone in,but I'm not sure how big of a space to leave for the skimmer. I'm waiting on a Auqa C EV 120 with a Mag 5 pump that was ordered and not yet here. I know the foot print of the Skimmer is 4.75 x 8.5. but with the mag 5 and all connections how big of a space do I really need. The tank itself is 11 3/4" wide on the inside. So if I go 10" x 11 3/4 for the skimmer section will that be big enough?

Don't forget about the gate valve that comes of the side of the skimmer that isn't included in the measurements I would add about another 4" to your short dimension to account for the gate valve and to leave enough clearance for the water outflow. I am going to say your skimmer section is too small unless you can put the gate valve over one of your baffles and if you make an acrylic stand for the skimmer you can mount the pump underneath the skimmer to save space.

I'll just wait till I get the Skimmer in to figure out the space I need. I like the suggestion about putting the pump under the skimmer. I have some plexiglass left over from another project that would work great. I just have everything else and I'm itchin' to get started ya know

I have a 30gal sump. it's divided into 3 equal parts. the skimmer(aqua-c ev120) is in the first section. the return pump and skimmer pump are in the second section. the refugium is in the third section. water from the tank is t'ed off and goes to the skimmer section and the refugium. I have a valve before the water enters the refugium. I adjust the valve so I get 75% of the water going into the first section and 25% to the refugium. also, bubble baffles seperates skimmer section from return section.
