Bush to create National Underwater Sanctuary

IMO Bush has been a great president, except for the port issue. This makes him even better.
You know other countries are going to step in and follow our lead.

I agree..he has had made some very good moves, but also some very bad, and IMO, his bad moves overrun his good ones. I can't say he's been an awful president, because he hasn't, but I can't say he's been a great president, because he hasn't. I really hope other countries will follow our lead in this marine reserve issue, as you said.

I'll play devils advocate here for a moment.
Where do you think you will get your fish and corals from if these countries follow us and make marine santuaries in their coastal regions.
Lets say, Tonga and Fiji decide to do the same. What then? Remember once the Great Barrier reef became protected ALL harvesting of any kind stopped.
Keep in mind I think conservation is critical and very necessary, but what do you think would happen to our hobby if all these other countries decided to follow along?
Would it be a good thing or bad?
Just food for thought. What do you think?

this is all a ploy
not to play conspiracy man, but he's doing this to appease the environmentalists who are blocking him from drilling for oil up in ANWAR.

Maybe if this happened, people would be more hard-pressed to find out how to breed more types of fish, and more people would purchase tank-bred fish, and aquacultured coral! That would be a whole lot better for the environment. I think the hobby would still survive, it would just be a bit different. JMO

Even if other countries follow this example and create sanctuaries, I don't think they will completely stop the wild-caught fish market. But it's good for everyone if more fish are tank-bred and we don't have to take them from the wild.

I would rather the oceans and the species that live there survive instead of our hobby.
If they don't protect the oceans, then we will lose a lot more corals and species of every kind anyways. So our hobby would still come to a sudden hault when everything started dieing. This project will protect the ocean life and I don't think it will effect our hobby much.
Hope that makes sense, I wrote this kind of fast. LOL.

I agree, hopefully responsible management will be the end product of a few countries following our lead. The Phillipines come to mind, I was diving there in the early eighties for the first time and went back in 89, made me want to cry. Between the dynamiting and harvesting with cyanide it was horrible what they had done to those reefs!
I'm certainly not a big Bush fan (I am a republican) but he scored big if his intentions are genuine.

But seriously, this really is a good thing. And so is aquaculturing corals...especially for us. Aquacultured corals are WAY easier to keep since they have spent their whole life under artificial conditions. Less change = less shock = happier coral. :jumping:
