Butterfly Fish

I'm starting up a fish only tank and wondered who's had the best luck with butterfly fish. I've had a few over the years and they've never lasted very long. The tank is a 90 gallon (48X24X18).

The first thing to know with butterflies is that they do much better in mature systems. They do not do too well with fluctuations, that newer tanks tend to have. They also like to graze off of the rock. A good amount of growth helps. They also require good water quality. What specific kinds were you thinking about?

My favorite is the pearl scaled butterfly. I'm just afraid I don't have the knowledge to feed butterflies what they need to stay healthy.

Pearl scales are one of the better choices of the "keepable" butterflies. If the tank is well established and has a lot of mature live rock, and has consistantly good parameters, a healthy specimen should do well. BF's enjoy a wide variety of foods. I feed mine mysis, chopped mussel, plankton, minced clam, pellets, bloodworms, things like Marine Cuisine and Emerald Entree, and also regular offerings of nori. IME, making sure there are no overly aggressive tankmates is important too.
