The Copperbanded and Yellow Longnose are said to be reef safe in most cases. But they still might chomp on a coral or two.

Some sites say the yellow longnose is not reef safe at all. One says with caution but none say reef safe. Damn and I really like the way they look and would love to make that my 4th and final fish in my 90 gal reef

Quote from Marine Fishes. "Yellow Longnose Butterflyfish in most cases, these fish seem to ignore corals, but they have been reported to feed on stony and soft coral polyps in the wild. Will also eat tubeworms and nip at sea urchin tube feet"

If you dont know if any butterflies are reef safe, you don't have enough experience to raise either of those fish.

Pardon me, but I have had SW tanks for 20 yrs, can't get much more experience then that! I never had a butterfly in a reef, and really just wanted others who have to tell me their experience, sorry if I didn't word my post more specific

Oh yeah, how do you get exerience unless you try one?

i was talking with a local reefer a few days ago and he said that the most safe butterfly was a pyramid butterfly, i had never heard of them before, and he said they can get pricy, you may want to reasearch one of those

Wow, nice fish. Went out shopping and found a copperbanded, didn't get it, it was huge and didn't look all that healthy, hubby said his mouth looked like a coral nipper lol. So I didn't get it, got some real nice corals though

Sorry I snapped. Having worked in a fish warehouse I tend to cringe when people mention Copperbands. The amount of them that have to die for just one to make it to the store is heartbreaking to say the least. I do check profiles for experience first but if no details are given I feel I must respond in a just in case they dont have enough manner.
I dont remember having seen a Pyramid fly. Having checked in about 300 flies a week for 4 years, I'd say they must be pretty rare. Maybe you can get them now though, I don't know. Copperbands and Longnoses eat a lot. They need to be in a tank that has some very populated LR. Copperband also love Aiptasia. If you have problems with those copperbands keep busy.

I didn't realize copperbands were so hard to keep, I had one about 15 yrs ago in a 60 gal, he got to big for the tank, and my 125 was a reef tank and at the time, I was afraid to chance it, so I gave it to my lfs. Are they hard to keep or hard to catch?
Are you sure my profile didn't give my yrs of experience? Thought it was in there :notsure:
