in some of my books it says to just add sea salt. a local health food store sells sea salt by the pound. is this safe? will there be any chemicals in it that i have to worry about?

Otto,
I believe sea salt for human consumption that you would find at the health food store is not the same as sea salt for saltwater/marine aquariums. Although it tastes great on rim of margarita glass, I would not consider it for an aquarium.
The folks at Instant Ocean have gone to great lengths to make a saltwater mix that has all the balanced components and trace elements found in natural sea water. Use the Instant Ocean and you will be good to go my friend !
Anything else ..... watch out !

go with instant ocean or reef crystals they are the best on the market specifically formulated for your saltwater tank. if you aregoing for a reff tank use reef crystals. instant ocean is more for a fish only tank while reef crystals is for a reef tank.

I use reef crystals for mine ...... anyway i belive that the salt at the health store would be very $$$$$$$$$$$$ and if you want too get some and try it in a small tank and see how well it works...... if it is real salt from the sea it would have everything that you need in it...

Salt made for aquariums is very different than the salt you are talking about. Health store salt probably contains iodine and possibly preservitives.Just because its in a health store dont mean its healthy. Aquarium salt is nitrate free, phosphate free, containsmajor and minor elements, enhanced calcium, strontium, traceminerals and vitamins.YES I DID READ THE LABLE. STEVE
