you have to buy them young, before one has the chance to turn female. put em in the tank, one of them will become a b**chy clown, beat up on the other one, grow larger, and turn female. the other one will remain male.

Agreed, don't get two large ones, just get two smaller ones so that they can determine the female. if you get two large ones you stand the chance of buying two females, in which they will just fight eachother.

sounds easy, except petstores around here rarely ever have any. if they do they are sick or way over priced. so hopefully if i find one small one and it takes awhile to fnd another that i still won't have a problem. off topic but back in 1994 i bought a awesome looking large maroon off a guy. i tried this three times, everytime i put a large BTA in the tank for the first hr he would be nipping it and sitting in it. then he would start ripping the tentacles off them and of course the anemone would end up dieing.. i have told alot of people this and nobody was ever able to understand why? if you ever want a tough anemone find a antler anemone,i had one get sucked into the filter and shred into little pieces and each piece grew into another one.
Thanks guys

Maroons are EXTREMELY agressive hosts. If you are going to try and get an anemone to host the clown, you need to make sure it is MUCH LARGER than the clown. Otherwise the Maroon will beat the tar out of it and end up killing it.

thats odd. why it that? the BTA's i got years ago were the biggest i ever saw,not as large as the rose BTA's but i think they grow bigger in general.

What is odd? The fact that Maroons are agressive? All clown species (including damsels) are very agressive in nature. Maroons are on the extreme spectrum of this, when hosting they tend to beat up on the anemone - and unless the anemone is much larger than the clown, the anemone may die. I'm not saying it will, i'm just saying with Maroons there is a larger chance of your maroon hosting your anemone to death (or any other coral).
What are you confused about?

suprised this was a normal behavior of them to do that to the anemone. yes i know these families of fish are aggresive i have had a bunch of different types growing up. my damsel wil attack when i'm cleaning the tank out if i go near his rock.
Thanks for the help!

I have a large Maroon Clown and was told that my best bet for adding a clown was to find a very small Clown that was already bonded with a large Clown. Kindof sad to break up a pair, but possibly your best bet.
On the other topic: A few weeks ago, I added a Rose Anenome in the hopes it would coax my Clown out of hercorner. She hangs out all day near my protein skimmer or travels shark-like back and forth at the surface of the tank. She almost never descends into the tank unless very hungry. She definitely noticed the Anenome and immediately nipped at it a few times then retreated to her corner. There has been no interaction since. Has anyone had a Clown bond with an Anenome weeks (or more) after its introduction?
