buying expensive live rock

i just recently purchased some LR from my LFS @ 8.99 a pound. i thought this was very steep but they say it is fully cured and it all seems to have excellent coralline growth on it. so i regretfully gave them my money thinking that i am probably getting dupe in some way or another. but i put it in my Tank and i notice today that it has what looks like a red feather duster growing out of a tube like rocky casing. it also has what looks like some white feather duster although very small and here is what got to me the most. one of the pieces had the smallest hole in it well i had my moon lights going and i turned on my normal lights to check something out and i see this long (4-6 inches) thread like creature coming out of the rock. when the light came on it retracted and the end had what almost looked like a snakes tongue split @ the end but appeared to have the stickyness of a frogs tongue... but it retracted to fast for me to get any pics. anyone might have a slight clue what this is good? bad? i dunno any hints would be great gonna try to get some pics

I stared at one of those things for like 10 years and never saw the other end. My fish win trophies and I sit there yelling at them to get out of the way so I can look at some ugly gooey stringy thingy.

Cured rock is always more expensive. It's around that price where I live.

:scared: $8.99 a pound!? wow thats really high price for 1 pound. well over here its only 3$ a pound. either cured or uncured just 3$ a pound. except branches are 5$ a pound. yeah i kno what ur talking about those stringy things. i always wanted to pull it out and see what it really was but its somehow too fast for me. my lfs says its good but i have no clue.

my lfs sells for $9 a lb, $8 if over a certain amount, but is already cured. the stuff i got from him was about $7 including shipping but was boxed up. it turned out ok though.
as for the feather duster things, i have probably 7 or 8 of them in the rock, and they seem to be just filter feeders.
I don't know about the 4-6inch worm, may be a bristle worm/fire worm. if it is very very thin, and white, check out spaghetti worms.

I think I bought rock from the same guy... I got a 50lb box for $97 but he was selling smaller batches at $1.97 a lb. GREAT rock!

ive got 2 lfs here that sell lr at reasonable prices both actually have it curing under the little stream jets and each sells for around 3.99 lb
i also have some feather dusters and i spotted what looks to be a red tentacle last night coming out if one of my little pieces of rock lol. i thought it was a red bristle starfish arm at first but the hole it was coming out of was just big enough for the arm thing so im guessing its a worm of some sort

the lfs i use hired a new guy and he tried telling me that they add 3 for every two pounds if u pick out your own LR. i just laughed and told him to call the owner up. i clean the owners pool and when he heard the guy was gonna charge me he felt bad and give me 2 pounds free so in case i gave hime a free month of pool cleaning in case he gave me some free filter refills.. man u strach my back i will tell u what u can strach lol
