While I wouldn't necessarily consider the Salifert calcium test "easy" (As in dip-n-read), it certainly isn't difficult either.
It entails: Take a water sample, add a few drops of the specified provided solution, then fill the 1.0ml syringe with another provided solution and start adding drops. Once the sample changes color, compare what's left in the 1.0ml syringe to a chart to get your reading.
I'd much rather go through a little work (That's actually kind of fun, somewhat mad-scientistish) and get a more accurate reading. Timewise, outside of waiting for a solution to fully react (Usually three to five minutes), the Salifert tests take just a minute or two.
