Yes it is I had my cal bump up to 500 once and I let it come down to 450.
I keep my cal 420-450 most of the time.

nope... IO salt is only 360 calk wise and i think 10 dkh.. you need to boost the calk lvl with some sort of additive.. ( calk portion if a 2 part calk/alk supplement additive.. i personally use RHF's 2 part and boost my water with it... i add 2.5 tsp to my 20 gal can while it's still ro/di.. then after 10 mins of mixing i add the IO salt... the alk part is already high so i dont boost that)
you can look up the DIY 2 part online.. just google "twopartsolution" and you can take it from there...

The difference: Is the glass is half empty or the glass is half full…

Do you use tap or mineral water?

Well the cheep salt mixes will tend to top out at 380 but you may have added some minerals that raise cal. Or your test is off or you keep making mistakes. Or it is a good salt mix...

Ok now I see, I think the test is off salifert test can be like that. A fresh batch should not be 470 cal.

again.. as far as i know.. IO is about 360 calk and 10 dkh... from the readings i have done and having to always boost my saltmix.. ( ill make a batch one day and test it and post it one day)
but geoj is right.. salifert did have a bad batch of test kits at one time.. i bought a salifert kit.. im using it but i dont like it.. too much work... i need to find a easier one for calk.. ( i think tropical marine is best for alk.. you just drop and count the drops till the color changes.. as easy as pie)
just got this from --.. after a little searching

I use oceanic.. never dosed a single thing consistantly tested my Calc between 400 and 450. API test kit, Salifert, and Seachem (that was my LFS). Not sure how that conclusion can be made about calcium content unless every batch was tested under a study..

well from what i posted before.. those where taken from the "reef chemisrty" forum on -- .. they have lots of super smart people over there including DR. Randy Holmes Farly ... so i believe those ### that i posted.. as for how your tank chemistry stayw w/in range by only water changes.. well.. oceanic has calk of 580 on the chart.. so with moderate calk/alk usage and bi weekly water changes.. you can keep in range... my tank with a few sps .. i have to add about 3/4 cup of each part of a 2 part to keep in range.. so i doing just water changes will bankrupt me.. ( hence i use IO.. it's only 350 which was close to what i orginaly posted anyhow... i boost it w/ 2.5 tsp of dowflakes and its up to par... btw.. IO only cost mt $35 for 180 gal mix.. thats why i use it.. )

Sorry I wasnt referring to the post with the actuals I was talking about your previous post where you stated that in general salt mixes have a 360 ppm content. I should of clarified... But I dont agree with that, as I have tested my water with 3 different kits and have nothing lower than 400 at any given time and most of the time its at 450.
