bigarn , while i would usually agree with you about something like this, i see one specimen being accidentally caught and donated to science while nothing of this size has ever been caught before or even seen, then it is a great thing when we can learn sooooo much from this one catch.
they said that one piece of calamari from this guy would be the size of a truck tire De, LOL

oh I agree as far as it being a great thing for science ... the pics just strike me as sad even though it was caught by accident.

That's an amazing catch. I used to like calamari until I got food poisoning from it. I agree good for science.

i kinda agree with bigarn.
for so long, these things were myths.
(do not bring up global warming)- but why all of a sudden are these things showing up? what is going on down in the deep water that these are surfacing now?
what else will show up?

I'm thinking either 1. adavances in technology are allowing for deeper sea studies and the ability to film at deeper depths. 2. fisherman are fishing at deeper depths thereby catching things they ordinarily wouldn't have. or 3. more "sea" studies are being done now more than ever, so when someone does discover something the national press of it is more than ever before.
I was thinking the same thing about why are we seeing all these things thought not to exist or rarely to be seen. And those are the things I came up with. who knows the real answer though.

One other thing is that up until recently, with the advent of cheap digital photgraphy and the internet, is that there may very well have been sightings and catching of these creatures that we never knew about because the people catching them didnt have an easy way to get pics of them spread to the 4 corners of the earth.

The world's oceans still holds alot of mysteries as far as sea creatures goes. New species of fish, inverts, etc ... are still waiting to be discovered to this day. Space is known as the final frontier but I think our oceans are as well.

an interesting fact for you:
"we know more about the surface of the moon than we do about our oceans"
