I would still suspect the test kit. Generally speaking salt water should not be able to hold 780ppm calcium. The calcium will precipitate out of the water column if the calcium gets to high. Even with a very low alkalinity I would be surprised to see calcium up at 780ppm. But, both of you need a alkalinity kit. That will tell us the other half of the story.
For calcium, alkalinity and magnesium the Salifert test kits are very good!!

My Alk on the 780 ppm bucket is 9, on the 580ppm IO it is 8. Whataya think?
If it is indeed the test kits, then when it is reading my big tank with the old salt in it at normal 480, and Alk 7, than how low must that be really...........scary.

it is close to imposible for the water to hold that high levels without just evaporating

i would defintly suspect the test kit. has it ever been damp and dry again?

I think there is no way that the saltwater will hold 780ppm calcium at 9dkh alkalinity... now I could believe that the water would hold 580ppm calcium at 8dkh alkalinity but I think that would be pushing it.
Can you have your LFS check it for you??

I was just reading some more online, and while I don't know about Ivy2 s tank, I think the reason I have not had precipitation "yet" it my alk is lower than 9 and my PH is 8.2. Seemed like 8.5 was the magic number for precip in PH and Alk 9....don't know, but might explain it.
City water guy is clueless, he said they don't do test for calcium, and had no idea what it could be..... but I found out they add sodium bicarbonate and soda ash, which is lime isn't it. And reading online that it is put in the water to precipitate out as calcium carbonate...well, my mind is getting full now.....
Kinda scared, I just did a 10 g water change on my 55g using mostly the 580, some 780 ppm mix. And I am just sittin here waiting for it to snow in my tank......playing twilight zone music in my head....
Ivy, did you test ALK yet? I can't wait to get my salifert kit!

I don't know of any "magic" number... but that still wouldn't explain the 780ppm at 9dkh?? Both PH and water temperature has an effect also but I still see no way that it would hold 780ppm??
