Calcium Level Question

I hear from different people about where the calcium level should be in your tank. Som say it should be on the high side and some say on the lower side. That is the magic calcium range to keep your reef tank at.

IMO 400-450 for Ca. is good. It depends on what corals you have though too. What do you have, or what are you getting?

I agree. I like to keep mie at about 410, but when it falls to 400, I do not stress and if it spikes to 430 or so (which it rarely does) then I am ok with that too. When it goes below 400, and it has done this often, I am not alarmed but I do get it back over 400 as quickly as possible.

You also want to make sure that it is in check with the Alkalinity level. If not, the Calcium level could fluctuate wildly and even cause a precipitation event.

What is the best way to test your calcium? You all mention numbers of 410 430 400. But, my kit uses # of drops "red to orange" then you add 4 and multiply by 50 to get your number. That puts you in mutples of 50 and I am always at 500 since I started using oceanic salt, before with reef crystal i couldn;t go above 300. Sorry if this is a rookie question to. I am new and trying to get my tank as nice as the ones I see here. Thanks

400 to 450
I here a lot of people keeping their tanks at 500 to 550. I even know some one keeping their tank at 600 and their tank is awsome.

What about the alk??? This one really gets me. I am always at 2.5 right now with the 500 calcium. And thats in meq/L. Is that ok? :notsure: There are just as many people saying I need to be much higher as there are people saying I am ok.
