calcium reactor

To quote our local neighborhood expert... "Leather corals are true Calcium hogs. They need a lot, even more than most stonies."
StreetDoc, coraline does consume calcium/alkalinity.

i completely disagree........if leathers contained so mcuh calcium how come they don't contribute very much to the reef structure.......also only a small % of there skeleton is made up of calcium......altho they grow faster than most peoples acros......sps will need more then double what a leather does even growing slower than it
plus if you have corraline and keep it under control and don't boost your calcium above 320 (which isn't needed in a softy tank) then you wont have a problem
they are called STONY corals for a reason

Your tank, your choice...but IMO, the goal should be to keep your tank chemistry near that of natural sea water. "Not boosting calcium above 320" won't provide great results. I would suggest searching this forum for quite a while. There are many good threads discussing tank chemistry and how to maintain it. HTH-

is that directed towards me searching the board?................320 is fine for a soft coral tank....absolutely no ill effects other then a little less growth and not the battle to keep your coraline down.......many great japanese reef keepers (mostly all of them) keep their calc at that level so they can have less coraline and a cleaner looking system (even many that have acros)

Do you have data to support this or is it speculation??

its common sence........how many ppl can you name that have a calc reactor on a softy tank.....and how many can you name that have one on sps?????...........isn't it just general knowledge that sps ARE reef builders and use much more calcium than soft corals????

No, not at all. It was directed towards mujtba, the thread starter. This is a question that requires research, and there are alot of answers on here, found by searching.

If you have a high Ca demand you'll be able to keep up with that demand using a Ca reactor. You probably wont be able to keep up using a Kalk reactor.

yeah alot of people use both to keep PH stable, and calcium alk stable, but you shouldnt need to unless your on a smaller tank.
Just stick to waterchanges dude.
