Calcium Reactors and CO2

I'm planning on adding a calcium reactor and have been trying to research this a s much as possible. My question is...
Is it necessary to have the CO2 feed on a calcium reactor or is it simply an efficency issue?

You need CO2 to lower the pH in the chamber/effluent to disolve the Calcium Carbonate Media between a pH of 6.5 - 6.8
