Im looking for an id on an eel. Just to make it hard on you-I have no photo of it. The one I saw was about 1.5' black with white spots (kinda). It had a head similar to a Dragon Moray minust the "horns". Its not in the list on this sites fish page.
Im hoping someone can help because my LFS has one it took on trade and I'm extremely interested. Was hoping to put a deposit on it tomarrow when I go in but I don't even know where to start researching.
The reason why I'm acting so desperate is my LFS is over 5 hours away and it would suck making the drive more than once a week. Well that and it'll be fun to see if anyone can id it for me.
This is the clostsest I've been able to find.

You may have it there crypt. Reading up on the jeweled it says they start out brown and turn black as they mature (the one I saw was definitly black and the pic is more brown) and the head is spot on!

So my next question is this-I have a 55 up and running to house his in and a 75 underconstruction right now. The 75 is drilled so I'd be able to totally lock down the top. The pages I looked it up on all said 50 gal min but that seems small since they claim it maxs at 2'. I have an oppertunity to grab this guy for $50.00 (is that a good deal), he appears to be in great shape. When I saw him he was plenty fat and very active.
I'm leaving around 1 pm to drive down there hope to get a few more posts before I leave.
Thanks again Crypt.

it will be fine for life in a 75g with not alot of other fish, a handle of damsels/chromis would look good. It is a pretty good deal, the one I got 60 so you save 10 bucks

Jewel Moray eel

Or
+1... Jewel Moray aka Mexican Dragon.
Great eel... relatively small, pretty active and relatively peaceful with larger fish (except at feeding time
). Good luck with that one.

I work at an lfs, had one up there for about a month, by himself, pretty docile. Kind of slow to go after the feeders... We could never clean near him though

nice-some schooling and no big investment should they be a midnight snack.
damsels won't be to mean for him?

nah, they will be fine, maybe mean to one another but not to the eel.

It gets like 2 feet in max length. You could put some bigger fish in there around 6 inches. They should be fine.
That is definately not guaranteed. Just because the fish is bigger than the eel, does not mean it wont get eaten...or worse, attacked, not able to be eaten and then die from wounds.

Well I made the drive down there to pick up my eel only to find out that a new guy sold it on me!! Im pissed!! I had my heart set on the jeweled moray! Anyone know of a reputable place to order one from? The only one I found was 250.00-thats a far cry from 50.00

There is no guarantee in this hobby on anything. That being said I have seen Triggers with lions that do well and a Aussie Tusk rip the head off a SFE. Stuff happens. Bigger fish should be okay.

I whole heartedly agree that there is no guarantee in this hobby. You take your chances with any fish. I've seen a Maroon Clown attack and stress a Clown Trigger so much, that the CT died.
But, it's kinda contradicting yourself when you say Triggers with Lions, Aussie Tusk and SFE and then say again "bigger fish should be fine".
I've seen the aftermath of juvenile SFEs attacking aggressive Triggers, to the point where the Triggers died...as you said, no guarantees.
But, just because the fish are bigger does not mean they'll be okay.

I was making a point that people try anything and that sometimes things work. I wasnt contradicting myself at all. Sorry for the confusion.
My overall point was bigger fish will fair better with a 2 foot eel vs smaller fish in my experienece that has been the norm. Now with large eels IMO its the exact opposite.
