Just got my first eel, a snowflake ofcourse. The little guy is barely 6 inches. Any suggestions on how to make the little guy more comfy?
45 gallon
25 lbs live rock tonga maybe?
2" of live sand
a couple a snails and one blue legger hermit crab that hitched a ride on the live rock.
Currently I have Krill for him/her since shes to tiny....plan to get silver backs latter

id try a bigger tank and more ls, tonga should be ok and silversides r good for most eels, just cut em in half, mine took to it at an early size

Will the krill be ok for a few days, until I return to my lsf? :notsure:
I plan to move the little cutie to my 90 gallon, when I save enough to up grade my reef tank, probably this spring.

more rock the better it will show up anywhere in your tank that the live rock is very ammusing fish it is the only original fish that i have outlived my original damsels(never cycle with live again) it is my families favorite thing in my tank even though i am currently pissed at it because it is hunting down the emerald crabs i just put in

I would leave him in that tank for a while...if he is only 6 inches big you will have a hard time finding him in a bigger tank...my buddy had a tiny one in a 75 gallon and he cant find him now..he is in the tank somewhere but cant find him...bigger doesnt always mean better unless you have a monster that needs lots of space.

if hes 6 in. he will be just fine till spring. The amount of rock you have is not enough for that sized tank but is plenty for the little guy to hide in. as for the inverts you shouldnt worry about him eating them for a while, mine was 20" and never ate any hermits. For feeding soak your food in supplements or garlic and do anything from the fresh market. Shrimp, clams, mussels, octo squid, pieces of fish, scallops whatever he will eat give him a varied diet and keep it fresh(no cooked or freeze dried)

he will be fine in the 45 for quite some time you can make caves for him using pvc piping then cover them with LR so you have less worries about falling rocks from burrowing i suggest 2 inch piping so he wont outgrow them for a very long time and when you decide to move him to a larger tank those can be moved along with him.in fact i have 4 inch pvc pipe for my tess which he sleeps in and when i break down the tank i plug all hole and move him in the tubes for his and our safty.my tess is 3 1/2 ft long

Mine grew approximately half an inch in 3 months.
Here he is.

He's 15.5" long and a scardy cat. Ever since I put a 3" Volitans he won't come out anymore?who figures.

Your 45 should be fine for a while. My snowlfake is 16 or so inches and I have him in a 37. He got exiled from my old 85 for killing multiple chromi, longnose hawk, a dottyback, purple reef lobster, and 2 different gobies. But he will soon be moving into his new 75 gallon tank that is integrated with my 75 gallon sump filter to my 300 gallon future reef.

Cool Eel!!! Thankyou all. Well, the 90 gallon I have now is going to be his this spring. I just bought a sailfin tang and a yellow tang. So by spring I'll will have to upgrade the 90 for them.
I got some of the silvers for him....I like having a variety of food for my tanks. Cause mna, if I had to eat the same thing everyday...YUCK!
Thanks all for your input....when he gets a little bigger I;ll take some more pic...so you can actually see him. LOL

My sfe is currently 21 or 22" long and about 1.5" in diameter and happy as can be in my 90... SUPER HARDY is all I can say about this guy.... very active contrary to what many post.. and loves to eat, although I regulate his feedings. He is in the tank with a mexican, some turbos and some hermits. Doesn't even care to touch them.... guess I am lucky butI think it's all about personality in the end.

My friend just put a baby sfe in an aggressive fish holding tank (3 triggers - clown, huma, and niger -, a lionfish, and a porc puffer all in a 55). First night out he went crazy, somehow weaseled his way out of the tank and ended up on the floor of his showroom. Found him the next day stiff as a board on the ground covered in spilled fish food. He put him back in the tank thinking at best he'd be a quick snack for the other fish. Damn thing came back from the dead and started acting normal (though he's never made a break for freedom since). He's perfect even in a ridiculously overstocked 55. And as long as you feed the SFE directly using tongs, it'll eat krill all day.

I got mine when it was about 6" long and just bigger around than a pencil, now its about 20" long and about 1 1/2" around. The only thing that aggrevates me is the fact it can rearrange live rock quicker than I can. I also think it has had a couple of my peppermint shrimp as cocktails. I feed it raw shrimp I get at Kroger. Had mine almost two years now.
