Last week I posted an issue about a Lion that was belly up. I was sure he would be dead by lunch time. It's now 4 or 5 days later and he is still alive but still belly up. He will starve to death before he dies at this rate. It's not a water quality issue. It might be and issue of contact with the slime coat from a Porc Puffer? But for some reason I doubt it (signs of a scuffle). The lion is breathing fine and shows signs of life but he just can't turn upright. Anyone out there that has any experience that might shed some light on possible reasons or solutions would really be appreciated. At this point euthanasia seems like the only option.

Good posibility it could be an internal parasite, lions are highly suscepitble to them in the home aquaria from what I understand.
I highly doubt it was slime from the puffer, besides puffers do not secrete toxins.

Sounds to me like it may be a swim bladder issue. But the disease guru's can probably assist in that area. Rare condition for a lion.

Yes, swim bladder. This happened to Deuce Bigalow don't you know? He called it Malawi bloat, which is actually the same thing. Anyway, you should put this fish in quarantine and administer a bloat medication. For the life of me I can't think of the name for this medication.
It was probably caused by the fish eating too much or swollowing air. How do you feed and how much? Did you thaw the food well?

Did you get it online or from an lfs? if an lfs, which one? There are several nice ones in the North Marrietta area.

I have had him for almost 2 yrs, I got him at about 3" and now he is 10". His diet has been varied. I've been reading up on other posts about bladder issues and the one thing I notice is that the other post seem to mention that their fish float, mine doesn't. He is in QT and has been since he was discovered with this problem. I feed every other day and he usually only eats a few pieces 2-3 of the menu item for the day. There is the possibility that a partially frozen piece was served. I doubt the swallowing of air as he pretty much stayed in the lower 1/2 of the tank.

You gotta love when Deuce Bigelow gets used as a source of reference outside of the Aquarium forum.
Unfortunately Ogre, I don't have more info on swim bladder. Google is your friend.

I know Lionfish can get fatty liver disease, depending on what you feed them. I do not know the symptoms, but something to look into

Sorry to hear about your Lion. I have a 3" Volitan Lion right now, but he likes to perch in corners upside down all of the time. Also when I feed him with a feeding stick with some Krill or Silversides...he dashes up to the top and hovers upside down a lot. After he eats, he swims to the bottom and just hangs out....right side up.
Not sure what is wrong with yours and hope it is a fluke and he recovers fully. Best of luck.
