Can a 175w mh ballast run a 150w bulb?

generally speaking it could...but not made for it...175w ballast requires 175 bulb or bad things can happen

The 150 vs 175w is one of the few exceptions in the halide world. There are metal halide ballasts available that can do both, BUT they have to be specially rated for it. You can't just take a 150w fixture and slap a 175 bulb in it or vice versa. Doing this without the ballast being rated will cause premature lamp failure.
