Can a clam be out of water?

from what i have read and learned it is not a good idea for them to come out of the water at all. thats just what ive learned

Clams do fine out of water, they just need to be kept warm. Most people ship them dry because they survive shipping better that way.

It's also a good idea to "burp" your clam upon returning it to the water. This is done simply by gently inverting it under water to help clear any trapped air bubbles. This can be minimized by allowing it to "clam up" tight prior to it's removal from the water.
