Can a HOB filter and Canister do more bad than good

I currently have an eheim 2215 canister filter running on my 55. I also have a coralife SS65 skimmer on my tank. If I were to add a HOB refugium, would their be any point to still running my canister filter. I would still keep it to occasionally run carbon or a poly-pad, but other than that are their any real benefits to having one??? Also, it seems that they can build-up impurities very quickly--and can't that do more harm than good??

Yes, there would be. The more filtration the better. And that is your mechanical filtration (eheim), and i'm guessing your fuge would jusy have microalgea? Althought Im a little confused as to if you want a HOB filter or refugium? Either way I would say keep the canister running too.

what harm could it do?
its more water movement.
and if you dont really need it, just fill it with some lr rubble and let it run.
