can a refugium replace a wet/dry??

I was wondering if I coould simplify my setup by replacing the wet/dry with a refugium. I think this would make my setup easier?? I keep reading posts and it seems like everybody has one (refugium) or a wetdry and some seem to have both. What's the right way to go. Right now I'm running two wet drys. display inot #1 with floss, bioballs and skimmer then pumps into #2 with floss, bioballs skimmer #2, then the pumps and on the other side of the basin is a rubble wall and a chunk of macro to house the pods. This works great but with evaporation it's tough to balance the flow plus I have 6 rio 2500's running 24/7 and my electric bill is out of control. Looking at commercial refugiums or the possibility of making one. Only major issue is size and will it fit into my cabinet. I'd like to go down to 1 good skimmer (deltec or asm) and loose the berlin and coralife. Please help Thanks

I started with a 30 gallon Wet-Dry and with a little plumbimg turned it into a 50 gallon sump-fuge with Live rock and Chaetomorpha Chaeto Macro Algae. No more nitrates

Yep used the wet-dry as a box with baffles (it is a big one)and put the outflow at the far end with a bulkhead. Instead of only part full with water like the wet-dry was, now it if full almost to the top. Only the baffle end is not used as my fuge now. All the rest if fuge with live rock in the bottom.

Moonie....Go withe the refugium. It is a good DIY project to make one that will fit your system out of acrylic.
I would have the place you buy the acylic cut it into the exact sizes you want. then you will just have to glue it. I think you will be very happy over the long run. My bioballs were a nitrate producing wonder.......

Moonie...If you google 'Marc's Sump' you will find an appropraite place to look for DIY acrylic projects explained in detail. PM messages containing this web site seem to disappear before they reach you.

might have something to do with the fact that you cannot post links and you cannot PM links...
