I can NOT afford a chiller for $500 for my 120 RT..I have MH's and 4x65 actinics by coralife...they are 6 inches from the top...but the temp here since its in a hot room and the steam is there is always around 81F I want to make sure that doesnt go up in the coming months so I thought maybe I would run some small fans at opposite ends to help cool off the water...but I can not find these fans anywhere I went to Home Depot today and they only have large fans ceiling fans. Does any1 know what I can do to avoid the chiller and where I can buy these fans please let me know exactly where i can find a 3-4 inch battery opperated fan as this site doesn;t sell fans I do not think this is a violation..or if you have any idea please help. TY

Any way you can raise the lights higher off the top of the tank? With the MH, your not going to have lighting issues by doing so, and it will help your heat. You can get small (3 or 4") fans from Radioshack (ask for computer cooling fans), but they have to be wired and plugged in. Might also check with your LFS, ours carries them.
Cooling fans are wired using a simple pigtail available at your local hardware store. Just be sure and cover your connnections well so that they don't corrode.

Go to walmart, they usually have small fans - that is where i got mine. Some people connect computer fans and run those, but i'm not sure what connector you would have to buy so that you get that molex connector 12v current.

go to the big E site.
look up a feller named "windydayzz" (or something like that) located in Fl.
he's got awesome fans, mega-quiet as well.

I second raising the lights higher from the surface. Is the top of your canopy open at all or do you have the top completely covered?

Hey Met Hater,
I bought clip on fans from Walmart. Cost about 7 or 8 bucks. They measure about 5 or 6 inches across. I have one clipped on to the side of my DT and the other clipped on to a shelf next to my QT. They reduce the heat about 5 degrees but I only have CF Lights. You'll need more than one. Lets Go Mets,
Steve

Just cut the molex connector off you don't need it plus its horrible connection to use around saltwater as they will corrode and fail. All you need is an old 12v DC power supply for an old cordless phone or any other small appliance. You can also purchase one from radio shack. Then all you need are the fans Radioshack carries computer fans and most computer parts stores will carry them also. Then just use a quality automotive wire connector or solder the wires together and use heat shrink over the splices.

Very nice - I'm going to have to try that. Because computer fans are must smaller than the fans at walmart / target.
Thanks!

I to run MH 2, 150w (2built in fans) over a 92 corner bowfront. I have my lights about 4 inches from water (open top). My sump 20L has a 9" fan (wal-mart) over it 24/7
My temp has never gone over 80. Night it runs 78-78.5 during the day it runs 79-79.8

Exactly what I use... $20 fan from Wal Mart. Plugs into the normal eletrical plug, huge amount of air movement, can't go wrong.
SH2000, you're trying to run a lot of different tanks. You're going to find the cost gets worse and worse as you set each one up. Have you considred just buying one large tank?

yes it is expensive but i try and get deal online on lighting fixtures and skimmer and filters etc...so far so good...i got rid of 1 of my 10's there was a leak..
the 55 is a qt so no huge costs there the other 55 i just bought an expensive stand but got a great deal and a light fixture and a skimmer and filter thats all setup but no fish yet.. the 80 and 120 are running well..basically 1 big one would be nice but they are all different tanks that serve dif. ideas...one is a RT with lots of corals the other is A 55 qt..the 80 is a FOWLR and the 55 i just made nice is TBD..the other 10 is a smaller QT for new fish and inverts the arrive.. and the 72 is also TBD...yes I would love to trade them all for a 300...but I really did not plan this it happend over 3.5 years so.. thats how it is..
