Hi, I'm new starting my first SW tank, I have a journal started but thght this wld be a better place to ask. I purchased a 225G acrylic tank. I asked the Co. for a quote on equiptment does this sound right? Any comment would be helpful.

(2) custom filer plates
200lbs tide-line sand
(1) 200 watt heater
200 lbs grotto rock
(2) gen-x pumps
(1) ocean clear canister filter
(1) 25 watt UV sterilizer
(1) 40 watt 50/50 lighting
All plumbing, parts, values, hose, clamps, etc
power strips, xtension cords, light timers, etc
(1) skimmer/pump
Salt mix - 225 gallons
(2) Bio-core filters
Liquid supplements, vitamins, de-clor, clarifer, etc
TOTAL OF $2,300.00 NOT INCLUDING TAX OR INSTALL CHARGE

I think their saying it's all new. They bought the tank and asked the same company for a quote for the other stuff.Atleast thats how i understood it
I'm new so i don't know if thats a good price.I guess it depends on what brands everything is??

Yes, your correct everything is new, but he didn't give me brand names of things. I paid $1200 for the tank inself, which is OK. And now the quote is for all new items for $2300.00 this is a business not a private sale. But I'm wondering about the equiptment. and can anyone tell me what GROTTO ROCK is?

What type of lightin is involved? 40 watt for a 225 sounds like stock lighting=worthless if you plan on keeping anytbing besides FOWLR. I would make a counter-offer if I were you, it can not hurt. Still no idea what "grotto rock" means.

Yeah i bet grotto rock is just for decoration. The kind they build grotto's out of.Not live rock like you need.

so this is just for the equipment that goes with the tank you already paid for?
i'd have to say by these descriptions it's not worth 2300

(1) acrylic sump 36 x 24 x 24..............$300
(2) custom filer plates........................?
200lbs tide-line sand.........................$40
(1) 200 watt heater (not big enough)...$25
200 lbs grotto rock............................$100- guessing something like base rock
(2) gen-x pumps................................$200-250
(1) ocean clear canister filter................$125
(1) 25 watt UV sterilizer.......................$175
(1) 40 watt 50/50 lighting.....................$30
All plumbing, parts, values, hose,............$75
clamps, etc power strips, xtension
cords,light timers, etc
(1) skimmer/pump..............................$175....probably Coralife Superneedle
Salt mix - 225 gallons.........................$30
(2) Bio-core filters......Not sure if you mean the complete canister or the actual filter.......Could be $125x2 = $250 or $40 if just filters
Liquid supplements, vitamins, de-clor, clarifer, etc.......$40
.
.
Just kinda estimating pricing on some item, I would think you could find all these items for $1200-$1400. I'm guessing the sand is just a bag bulk beach sand and that the LR is either lace rockl or base rock.
.
I'd skip on the UV sterilizer and the dual canisters filters, save the money or upgrade your lighting or skimmer.

I just wanted to say how nice it was for you to post the above pricing for this person. it just struck me as a very nice thing to do., sometimes its hard to get a price quote from other than a business thats doing all it can to get ahold of the hard earned dollar from a newb to sw. You however have estimated it for them, and the co. he's dealing with will now have a better educated person doing business with them and maybe wont try so hard to take him for all he's worth, so to speak.
thank you for being a nice person

Hi and thank you for all your comments and the est price list was very kind. Also I do agree at this point the price is high. I spoke to the company and asked for an itemized quote and also what was GROTTO ROCK
? He stated that it was base rock that was dug up somewhere in Colo. I did let him know that I will be using live rock and I will provide it, as I would want to pick it out. So, now we will see what the pricing comes up to be once itemized. Thank you again for your time and thoughts. I need all the help I can get. How is a Burlin Skimmer?

heh, he was selling you baserock? man, i think i need to start up a shadey lfs or online store, you probably deflated his bubble when you said you would supply the live rock.
not sure on the berlin skimmer, but can check out the equiptment and lighting forum for help there
