i want specifically crocea and maxima clams.
i guess im referring to VHO lighting right? and the T5 are just a branch off of the VHO tree right?

I would think tank depth would be something to take into consideration here. And yes, I think you might could keep some clams with T5 lighting. But I honestly don't know much about them right now.
T5 is pretty damn good lighting though. I know with enough, and the right tank size, you can keep some sps under T5 lighting. I've seen it done.

Mine did great in my 150 under 8, nova extreme 54 watt bulbs. I did keep it about half way up in the tank though because it is a deep tank. It is a crocea.

I have been told that with the right amount of T5 lighting you can keep anything under them. I am planning to get a 14 bulb T5 fixture for my 125 reef. Each bulb will be 39w so I will have 546w total and have been told that will be enough for anything. Does anyone know the care level of maxima clams by the way?

i think im going to do MH 20k for the daytime and then for night time i want actinics.
are all t5's actinics? or are VHO'S actinic? and is the t5 for the day time lighting?
im confused in this aspect of reef lighting.

I have a 75 gal. (20" deep) and have 6x54 watt T-5's. They dont have the individual reflectors around them. My Ultra Crocea clam has been doing great for a few months now...hes about 1/2 way up in the tank. If I get another, I would consider placing him on the sandbed. HTH

ill try to take a stab at this. flourescent lighting (power compacts, VHO, and T5) are available as actinics, or in other daylight spectrums like 10k 12k etc. metal halides just come in a variety of colors (6500k-20k). now a 20k halide will be pretty much all blue, so there really isnt any point inadding any kinda of actinics. now if you wanted halides you could go with say 10 or 12k bulbs with some sort of an actinics supplement (pc, vho, t5) and it will give you a nice crisp white look and you will be able to shut the halides off at night and leave the actinics on. T5 are just as good as halides in most cases if you get the right setup. the run cooler, and are more energy efficent. good brands of T5 fixtures are aquactinics and tek. hope that helps.

we got a 90 gallon with 6 - 54 watt T5's and in the tank we have a couple of Acro's, a green slimer, a couple of green and pink birdsnest, green and orange monti caps and a croaca clam. Everything does pretty good with this lighting.

Actinics are blue. There needs to be a dark period in the tank just as there is night. If you run actinics at night you will not be giving them a dark period.
You want to run "lunars" at night simulating the moon; thats if you want something at night. These are like 1watt lights at the most and do nothing beneficial to corals.

i understand that. im not sure you read my above posts.
during the AM i will have MH
during the evening PM i will have actinics.
when i am sleeping the moon lights will be on.
what i need to figure out, is which type of actinics makes corals "pop" more... the blue or the purple color?
