Hey guys...I was wondering if it would be ok to add 1 more fish to my 29 gallon tank?? Here's what I have so far:
  • 1 yellow tail damsel
  • 1 blue fin damsel
  • 1 yellow tang
  • 1 hermit crab
    1 cleaner shrimp
    5 turbo snails
    1 sand sifting sea star
It's a 29 gallon tank with crushed coral and about 22 pounds of live rock. My levels are all really good and I just did a water change. I don't want to over-crowd the tank, but I'd like to have one more medium sized fish in there. Also, what can happen if the tank is over-crowded???
Thanks!:happyfish

For one thing the yellow tang will get too big for your tank. Secondly do not get a med fish, because your tank will be too crowded. Lastly, if you have too many fish...short story...you could lose them all. I would go into more detail but I am heading to work.
Hope this helps.
Ps. Do a search of this sight and you will see much more advice of the issue you ask about.

Damsels are what some ppl like they are mean and will bully on other fish. Yellow tangs need at the min a 55 I would go to a 75 a 55 with rock might be kinda small. Sand sifting stars will kill the stuff in a living sand bed they wont bother the bacteria but they will kill all the other stuff. You may want to beef up your inverts alittle you dont have to do it now you can add more when you want.

Thanks for all of the replies. I appreciate your info. The guy who runs the LFS told me that this yellow tang would be fine in my tank! :nope: I should have known better because I've read up a lot on it and I knew they needed a 55 or bigger. It's not a very big tang, but still.
Maybe I can just get another damsel????
What other inverts do you guys suggest????
Thanks again!

Well best thing is to look at inverts your self cause there are "alot" and you will like what other dont so I would google search for Inverts and you should get alot back on it and just look at the diffrent pictures and what they eat and how big they get and stuff like that. There are alos a few sites that have nano fish it will take you to a list of fish that can be kept in nano tanks so there small and you could have more of them.

You might want to get rid of your Damsels, they are extremly aggresive and will go after your Tang. The Tang will get up to 8" when fully grown.....
Keep an eye on your Ammonia levels to see if the tank is handling you bioload.

I have a 30 gallon tank and my lfs told me also that it would be fine to put a yellow tang in there. I haven't though. I have seen the "TANG POLICE" several times already on this board, and I don't want to be arrested
I would advice also to search the boards, thats how I get alot of good info. And of course by asking, there are many knowledgable Aquarist on this board who are very helpful.

I have a buddy who put a Yellow Tang in a 45 gallon and the tang didn't last but about 9 months. I would say the 29g tank is way too small for that size of fish. Your LFS guy basically lied to you. You could call the LFS where you purchased the tang and ask for a refund / store credit and possibly get some inverts. How is your tank handling the fish load you have?
