Your more than likely going to have problems with Detrius and food getting stuck in your CC . Your going to have to address it at some point . I would bump the water changes up a little more often and vac the CC real good when you do . Other wise your nitrates will creep up and get you .
Good advice, but once the puffer eats the shrimp; the nitrates aren't nearly as important. BTW, if you find the easiest way to do water changes, they seem to get done more often. Funny thing!

That should only take a day or two .
Water changes for me are this . Turn Pumps off . Syphon 15-20 gallons out add 15-20 gallons of clean SW and boom done wipe up the mess and your done 30 minutes tops .

Yeah, its no big deal. I mix & heat water in a big rubbermaid trashcan on wheels; its filled & kept in the laundry room.

Good plan . I have the big 5 gallon water jugs I mix mine in . I add the salt to the jug fill with water . Shake it up and let it sit . About every half hour I shake them up . The next day I do my water change . I don't worry about heating the water to like temp as most the time room temp is with in a few degrees of tank temp . I personally find smaller changes more frequently to work for me .
I just find it less of a hassle .
