ummmm.... you should NEVER have live rock shipped in more than two days...... its going to take a long time to cure and you arent going to have much growth on it by the time it is done.
but yes, you can cure it in that as long ahs you have a powerhead and a heater.

yes i am a newbie at this still and after reading some, which I am glad I did, I realized I cannot just add this to my tank or I will have wreaked havoc ....
it sucks but i got 15lbs for 45 bucks to my door, so I suppose I can wait 2-3 weeks for it to cure in a bucket or that old water cooler, (good idea), I just have to go buy another heater and a powerhead....
will I have to change the water or anything ?
I figured I'd do a 5 gallon water change from my tank and used the 5 gallons removed for the rock to cure as my water is pretty good ....
will that work ?

where in the heck did you get LR that would actually ship it across the country using Ground? If I were you, I would certainly do no business with them again in the future. Any place that would even think of doing that is a joke! Especially this time of year with the cold temps...
That rock will need cured for a LOOOOOOONG time...... And the chance of any life being left on it when it arrives are slim to none.....

There is no "it'll have to do for now" They will DIE especially in such a new tank. be wise to take them back to the LFS you got them from for a credit.
About the LR, I know it's not coming anymore but in the future, just add it to a bucket, powerhead and heater and watch the water parameters. Changing the water often or part of it will help the ammonia, trites and trates not to be to high for to long.
