IMO everyone who owns a fish tank should own a shop-vac. You can use it for many things to include sucking CC out of a tank w/o removing any of the water. I have a five gallon shop-vac ($30 at Wal-Mart) that I use just on my tank (mostly to clean out my canister filter without destroying the bacteria). Just remember to rince it off after use saltwater rust the screws under the lid...
