Can old living rock come back to life

Family friend has some living rock he had from his old salt water tank he had awhile ago. I was wondering if it would be safe to add to my tank.

Just curious. Can u add to an unestablished tank if you adding rock thats "alive" as well?

Brand new tank un established and what not, yea just rinse it off first with ro water then add to the tank.
