Can Salt Go Bad?

My friend gave me a half bag of IO, the salt seems a clumpy, as if moisture got in to bag. Is this stuff still good? If not I don't want to use it. What do you all think?
Thanks-
Jeremy

I think it's still good, our always gets moisture in the bag.

salt obsorbs moisture so it will get hard and clumpy
the doesnt mean that it bad
i get salt in buckets which has a ruber seal in the lid the keeps moisture out keeping it granulated. Buckets are bigger, last longer and probably cheaper in the long run than getting it bags. $ per gal. of salt

Guppy Slayer- where do you find buckets of it? I've only seen it in bags.

Buckets of salt is the ony way to go for any medium to large system. The lid makes such a good seal there is no clumping of the salt. Its way cheaper to buy it in bulk as well. When it runs out you have a nice bucket with a good fitting lid as well.

Even brand new unopened saltmix contains some moisture.
If you get a lot of additional moisture in an open bag of saltmix, calcium carbonate can form as a solid within the saltmix powder.
If you go to use this bag of salt, and find that some of it just will not dissolve not matter how long you let it set, or how hard you stir it around .. then chances are very good that the stuff in the bottom of the mixing container is calcium carbonate ( chalk ).
I sometimes see a little of this in my mixing containers.
If I saw a lot of it .. I would probably hesitate using it in my reef tank.
Best thing to do as mentioned is buy the large buckets of saltmix.
Or if you like buying the smaller bags, afater you open the bag pour the unused saltmix in an airtight rubbermaid type storage container.

Thanks for the info. I will let you know how it looks when I get it mixed up. I took the advice of several and purchased a big ol 200 gallon bucket of IO.
Thanks again-
Jeremy
