Can someone explain a sudden nitrate spike?

Last week when I tested my trates were >20, and tonight I tested and got a reading of between 40 and 60. I haven't made any changes in the tank in the last week. I did repeat my test tonight with the same results.

None of my fish. Unless it's a member of the cleanup crew, but I certainly don't think a little hermit or snail would cause a spike like that. My brittle star has gone missing again though.

I'm not getting a Potters angel. I am planning for a future tank. I also don't have birds, but I do have cats. The FW fish and hamsters belong to my daughter.
I have not stirred up the sandbed.

If you have any... check any sponges or foam filters/carbon/filter socks what ever. How old is your ro/di unit? Also.. I have a cool site if your interested since you live in Ohio. rlubecky@sbcglobal.net

Thanks!
Didn't think about the waste under the rocks. My clean up crew is a little smaller lately.

Im just a novice and still have yet to answer my first question, but my 2 cents is
I think in a case like this you will have to post a WAY longer description otherwise every one is just asking YOU questions.

I would test your nitrates on your RO unit just to be sure. I know my ro/di unit was showing 5ppm or so after 5 months. At least check it to rule the ro unit out.

Yeah... that's what I thought too. IDK, I guess I'll just do WC's until they come back down.
