Some kind of brackish Goby was what I was thinking too. Finding something brackish at the beach isn't that unusual. They live where a fresh water tributary flows through at low tide, and salt comes in at high tide. They get sucked out and washed back in.
The reason this is stumping us is where the beach is. Hawaii's capture laws are so strict I doubt that anyone would bother exporting anything that there isn't a huge market for.
Whitey, please tell me your just playin. Everybody knows that a Nurse shark is the final metamorfosis of a Candy Stripe Hogfish.
 I hope somebody gets that one

PS thanx sebae09 for the cool index link
deadfish11, many fish found in your area are exclusive to there. If you were to post him on a brackish or goby collectors board not only would you find out what he is but you would probably get offers for him. Judging from his spectacular and unique appearence, if this is an exclusive Hawaiin species he may be worth more than you can imagine.

Deadfish11 you may also find that it is illegal to collect this type of fish, so keep that in mind as well, as responsible hobbyists we should make sure that we are collecting only legal fish, as well as doing our part to conserve the natural state of our oceans so that the hobby can continue for many many generations to come, but i am not an eco freak or anything like that so please dont take it like that, i just know that our oceans are in a fragile state as is, and yes taking one may not dirupt everything, but "if everybody took just one" i have heard that a million times... anyways, nice looking goby, if it isnt illegal maybe you could start collecting and shipping part time to pay for your hobby...

one more thing, i wanted to ask how the selection of corals and inverts and fish were in your area, i noticed on a lot of websites that they were not allowed to ship to hawaii... and how is the price compared to everywhere else? any pics from your area or your tanks either, would love to see them

well i no that this goby is not illegal. its not against the law to take home fish from the beach. the corals and live rocks in hawaii are illegal to sell and buy. also theres some fishes like a rabbitfish is illegal too. only anemones are allowed to be sold in hawaii.many stores wont sell it to hawaii is because it has to travel a long way to here and its illegal to send live things threw mail.
