i bought it off a person that i called to buy a tank from. they posted there tank on craigs list but the tank sold in less than a hour. they still had all the live rock and i asked them if i could buy it. i got 2 huge buckets...prob over 50 pounds for 50$. its really really purple. and some pink and red too. but some parts of it where it appears to be the bottom of the rock looks like concrette or something. the guy said it was figi rock and it seemed like he had it for a long time but im not sure how long.

coraline algea adds color. did the rock sit out of water for a period of time? if so you will have some die off, but it will make a come back

there are tons of different colors and a couple different growth patters for coraline algae, usuall pink and purple dominate because they are some of the haridest and fastest growing but any colors you have that you want to spread you can scrape off and atomize into the water, it will help seed your tank with that color. just a few tips on caring for coraline
1 flow is important
2 ceartain colors like different lighting
3 maintain good calcium levels
4 phosphates inhibit coraline growth
hope this help a bit.

yes you need a powerhead to maintain oxygenation and flow, without one the water will just stagnate and rot, and lack of oxygen will kill everything left on it. wich would be the opposite of what your going for.
