can you collect your own fish/corals

does anyone know a site or have knowledge of what the collection laws are in the US/ or if its collected in the carribean what is the laws on importation?

in florida it is against the law to collect coral, live rock and all ornamental fish caught must be returned to the water. I have been told it is illegal to collect the mangroves that wash up on the beach, even though they are going to dry up and die!

I think it is pretty much illegal anywhere you go in the US, but I could be very wrong. I am not totally sure.

thanks i live in Michigan so im not about to go do it(like i could even if i wanted to), i was just wondering..im glad you cant it would be horrible for the reefs

When I was diving in the Caymans, you weren't even supposed to *touch* anything, much less collect it. I'd imagine most of the collection must be done with some sort of permit, just about anywhere you are.

in places like utah, kansas, montana, etc. you can collect anything you want from a LOCAL ocean and put it where you want

I love collecting syringes,shoes, plastic bags and condoms off the jersey shore.....no laws against that in nj
