i have crushed coral and have read that that is not so good so i am thinking about switching to LS can you cycle it in a tote with a heater, power head and regular water changes?

In one word... YES
In a few more... Your on the right track with heat/flow/water changes. If you use the search feature you can find members that have documented the process of removing their crushed coral. If I remember correctly they usually did it over a period of time say 25% per week instead of all at once, but its a good alternate approch and should give you some good ideas.

It depends on the conditions as there is no "magic timeline". Cycle it as you would a tank if you decide to go this route.
