Can you have too much current?

I have a 37 gal, but plan to have a 75-90 this year some time soon. I have a MJ900, and a MJ1200 on my skimmer, plus a ZooMed Power Sweep 214 (I.E. no power). I was going to get a new MJ900 to replace Mr. no power. Would that be too much current for my 37 gal. Should I go with a 600 or something? I'm trying to think ahead and another 900 would definitely be needed in a 75-90. What are our thoughts?

A minimum of 10x turnover is recommended but I prefer closer to 20x turnover some have almost 25x turnover.

Sure. You want the tank water to be moved around at a rate of about 10x an hour minimum. In your case this would mean all the gph of every pump should equal about 370 gph in a 37 gallon tank to achieve a 10x turnover.

here what I have:
Emperor 400 = 400gph
Maxi-Jet 900 = 230gph
Maxi-Jet 400 = 106gph
BakPak2R skimmer w/ Rio 600 pump = 200gph
that equals 936 or 24.6 turnover rate..
I have another Maxi-Jet on the way. I want to take the Maxi-Jet 400 out of one corner and put another 900 there so I can balance out the sides. Is this going to be too much? that would bring my total up to 1060 or 27.8 turnover rate..

Personally, I don't think you can ever have to much turnover. If you ever go snorkeling somewhere tropical, the currents are like a washing machine.

I sort of agree. Current does so much in a tank, especially alternating current. There are some corals though that do not appreciate being slammed with water so placement becomes critical. I found that out the hard way with a Bubble Coral.

Okay so I have enough turnover for now, but I still want the MJ900.
I've got
Emperor 280 = 280
Aqua C skimmer w/MJ1200 = 295
MJ900 = 230
ZooMed Power Sweep 214 = 160
Total = 965 or 26 times over.
If I replace the ZooMed with another MJ900
That would put me at 1035 or 28 times over.
So I think I'm going to get the 900.
