Canister filter cleaning questions.

Well I have a Eheim 2215 on my 29 tall and just thought that I hadn't cleaned it in several months. How often should this be done on a marine/reef system? What all is involved? Do I just clean the top filter sponges? The three stage filtration below the pads seem dirty but don't want to clean anything else until I figure out what to do. Can anyone help with a forum post that gives good detail or good advice? Thanks...

I have a Fluval 303 and I clean it every couple of months. I take it all out really. Sometimes I leave 2 of the 4 foams in just for the bio. I replace the media and fill it back up. It hasen't seem to be a problem for me. I really don't think this is going to cause a cycle. Why would it, your tank is established right?

Now if Im not mistaken all you want to do is clean out your filter. If that is it you will be fine. Just replace half of the filter pads and keep the other half for the bio, if you have filter pads. I would just do it taking into consideration the amount of water you are emptying from the canister. Include that as part of your water change. This is because it is only a 29 gallon tank. You will be fine. You are suppose to clean the filters.

That is what I thought. I know that is a stupid question but I had to ask. The filter was on my 75 for a long time. I usually clean the filter pads every 3 months. That is what was recommended by my "LFS." I try to get several opinions even though I trust them.
