yesterday a bunch of gunk started spraying out of my canister filter. it looked like grey sheets of solid webbing or what a jellyfish might look like if it was sat on by a whale.
i used a fish net to pull some of it out and it gathered up in a slimy pile.
will it be harmful to the tank? is it just bacteria built up or something?
i've only had my tank set up for 2 weeks if that makes a difference

No idea. Maybe a photo might help describe the problem and what kind of filter it is coming from.

2 weeks for any build up is not likely. What kind of canister filter? If you have any foam filters inside those should be catching any debris trying to pass through. Did you have anything in the tank that might have died and been sucked up into the filter when you were not around?
