I have an Oceanic canister filter that is rated for a 65 gallon tank(my tank is 55 gallons).
I run Chemi-Pure in it(replace bi-weekly), a sponge, and some floss.
I also have 55 lbs of live rock and 25 lbs of base rock.
Is there something else I should put in the filter?
The sponge and floss get real nasty real quick.
Any sugggestions?
What do you run in your canister filter?

Do you have a protein skimmer, and how long has this tank been running?
The reason I ask is some people believe that any sponges or filter media will cause a nitrate buildup unless cleaned very often.
I suppose the sponge getting nasty is a good thing. :notsure: It would leave me to believe that it's doing it's job and cleaning the water.

I am just looking for alternatives. Is there something that I can place in the canister that will work better.
Yes, I run a protein skimmer and my tank has been up for approx. 4 months

What do you mean by work better?
It seems to me that if it's filling with gunk, that it's working well.

What media does everyone use in their Fluval canisters? I'm also curious what I should be placing in the drawers.

How often do you have to change the phos-guard?
Also, I have 2 baskets in my canister.
Currently in the bottom basket I have 1 piece of floss, chemi-pure, 1 piece of floss.
The top basket has 1 piece of floss and a sponge.

(yes it is)(green bag).....i had fluval 304s so it had 4 sponges and 3 compartments.....
polyfill will act as a better sponge when packed into the compartment to pull out more waste... you can put your media on top of it and you should be good to go...check it in a week and see how much waste youve pulled from the water.
