I used a valve on a fluidized sandbed filter with the hopes of creating a denitration filter and it did work but it was difficult to maintain a flow rate that would be fast enough to be of any use and slow enough to keep the filter oxygen depleted. Also read a few horror stories about these filters and denitrator coils releasing toxins back into the tank when the system is upset and abandoned the project. Now I rely on LR and my refugium for nitrate export and the canister is mainly to help with the very fine sand I used for subtrate if it is disturbed by a burrowing fish or me working in the tank it takes several days for the water to clear, but the canister will clear it within a couple hours.
