Canister Filter Questions

I just bought a Fluval 305 Canister filter for my Freshwater 46 gal bow front. Even though this is for my freshwater tank I am hoping that someone might be able to help me with it.
My tank has Discus fish, they don't like really turbid water but I am wanting to know if this filter has to be on the highest flow to work properly??
Also, the outflow should it be above the water so you hear the water splashing or can I keep it just below the water surface for a quiet flow of water??
I am wating to make sure that there is enough oxygen going into the tank for the fish, I do have some live plants in this tank but its not heavily stocked and no Co2 either.
Is it necessary to run an airstone with this type of filter for enough oxygen??
Anyone that has this filter that could help me with the right settings on it would be greatly appreciated. I has been up and running for 3 days now but I want to make sure I have the flow right.

I had this type of filter years ago with my freshwater tank. You can put the outflow closer to the surface to ease the noise and create a ripple effect to get plenty of oxygen flow. I also used a wall of bubbles in the background, mostly because it looked like a waterfall.
My fluval didn't have different settings...new technology?

You can run it on any flow setting.
As Flower stated, point the exhaust upward to break the surface. You may want to change out the factory supplied exhaust tip for a different style to make this easier.
I used the Fluval surface skimmer attachment for a while and it works well if you keep the water level constant. Too high, or too low and it sucks air or does not work. I played around with the plumbing a little to get it to work better. (the overflow design helps oxygenate)

The new ones have a lever to control the flow through the canister. You can close it all the way to take the top off and clean the inside and it never loses it's siphon.

You can run a slower flow with the 305...The little black handle in the middle of the intake and output pull it up to slow the flow.

Can I use the Aqua Clear ones or do i have to use the Fluval ones only??

Buy a reusable media bag and bulk carbon.
