canister filter

im setting up a 25 gallon saltwater fish only tank. i want to use a canister filter. i understand that ppl say it doesn't have enough biological filtration in it. sence all 3 stages r needed, can i run just a canister filter with 3 stage filtration that supports a much bigger tank to run it. therefore it will have alot of biological filtration for that smaller tank. im not gonna have any live rock, just fake stuff. ill have live sand tho. will i be ok? if not what do i need to do?

What kind of fake stuff?
Fake rock?
The Live Sand will seed it with bacteria and it will add to your Bio filtration.

For the $ I would buy a small sump/ref and fill with Chaeto

Pic?
If it has a lot of surface area, you will have more bacteria as it resides on surfaces.
A sump would give you a place to add sand and rubble rock for better filtration, not to mention the added water capacity. (and as Geo stated, cultivate chaeto)
Don't forget to service your canister often to keep it clean.

i dont have the room for a sump/ref. i need some kind of filter that is not too expensive that will run the tank alone . i just need some kind of hob filter or canister filter that will run the tank by itself. i dont have the room for anything big . a canister is the biggest i can go.

I agree.
HOB filter and good skimmer. Canisters are easier to neglect and more expensive. I run a canister and an aquaclear HOB with chaeto in it and a light added on top along with a HOB skimmer.

-25g tank
artificial reef insert(fake rocks that look exactly like lr
-aquq-tech power filter (up to 40g)
so the only other thing ill need is a protein skimmer?

I would buy the largest aquaclear (or equivalent) I could afford. The media chamber in the small units is not big enough to support chaeto growth. Best price I found was on sale at am-azon-com. You can't really go too big where the aquaclear is concerned, IMO.
