Canister Filters and Media

I just bought a Rena XP3 for my 125g. There are 6 compartments for media. The filter came with 2 different filter pads (coarse and medium), Bio-Zorb, and a micro pad. It recommends using ceramic rings or bio-chem stars in the middle compartment. I'm just starting a reef tank but have had fish for a while. What is the purpose of the ceramic rings and should I use them?

I have two XP2s on my 75g. I'm using the bio-chem stars in both, although the rings work just as well I'm told. These build up a beneficial bacteria on them over time.
Just be careful when cleaning your filter: You want to rince the rings/stars in salt water (preferably some taken from the tank)--fresh water will kill the bacteria on them and bring you back to square one.

Ok. Thanks. I have 100 lbs of LR and 100 lbs LS. Do I need more biological filtration? Also, why do you have 2 filters on your 75. The XP3 is rated 350 gph for up to 175g. I thought the Xp2's were up to 100g.
