cannister filter for Phos Reactor?

I am currently using an Eheim 2028 on a 150 and everything is great except for the *^&^*&% algae! I am not using chemical filtration now nor have I for about a year. But I now concede I need chemical help so I am considering another cannister for chemical filtration only. I don't have room for sump so it has to be cannister. Please give me your advice on the following 4 questions,
1) can a cannister filter (like a rena filstar) be used as a Phos Reactor?
2) can you put chemipure in the cannister with the Phosban or like media?
3) how hot does Phosban get? Will it melt plastic?
and,
4) what products would you recommend? (I am suggesting Phosban because someone said it was good.)
Thanks for your help I trully do appreciate your help.

I used a filter called Rapids Mini canister filter rated at 80gph on a 240 I maintain for someone with phosban in it and it worked great. I also used Marc Wiess Algae magic along with it. I used a low flow because I think that phosban and simular ferric hydroxide medias require a low flow through to get the full benefit. BICBW (but I could be wrong)
She had a lot of hair algae come up from some eaby rock she had bought that was termed Haiti LR. Crappy rock. Nothing but sponge and algae on it, though the eaby add showed pics of something else.
On my own little tank, a 20 cube, I use a phosphate/carbon cut-to-fit pad in an Aquaclear filter and have since start-up back in Aug 06 instead of a protien skimmer and it keeps the tank in top shape. If you PM me I will give you a link to the product.

Thanks for the help. I sent a PM and I hope I did it correctly. BTW, are those your birds in the picture? I am a bird lover too. I have a blue and gold macaw named chester. I will check the site later to see if you received the PM. Thanks again and the tank is a show stopper!!!!

Unfortunatly, yes, they are my birds and only half of them. lol. They are great except in about 30 minutes from now when when it starts to get dark and the calls and screaming starts and I have to rush out and get them all in before the neighbors come over to hang me. The Pink Mollucan you can literally hear 2 streets over.

Birds are great and it looks like you have your hands full! I will take your advice on the items in the PM and hopefully get this tank under control. I want to get some more Mexican Turbos and my shrimp agree. I think I can read the expression on their faces as "the last batch was delicious!". Again, thanks.
